Becoming a mom on my own, a choice mom, a single mother by choice is the biggest, starriest, hardest, and most wonderful decision I’ve ever made. It wasn’t a fast decision either. I became aware of this path to parenthood because of blogging.
Somehow while reading blogs I came across the Single Mother By Choice blog and website and shared it with my mom. We talked about it and thought it was cool for those women. At that time we both assumed I’d be married sooner than later. Mom thought it would be a good plan B. Fast forward a few years I decided the time had come for plan b.
Now rewind a little. Between the time of deciding that would be a good plan b and deciding it was time to initiate plan b there was a lot, I mean a lot or research on my part. I joined the Single Mother By Choice. I found BostongirlTV on YouTube. She was the only Black Woman disusing being a choice mom at the time. I read up on court rulings when known donor was used vs. a donor via a sperm bank. I researched the impact on children and how a child knowing their birth story from the beginning vs. it being revealed after having misleading them lead to happier outcome. I read, watched, and listened to as much info as I could before deciding.
The one thing I wanted to know that I was never able to find was a video on what the day to day would be like, what a day in the life of a single mother by choice looks like. How were other moms doing this alone?
You see being a single mother by choice is different than other types of single motherhood. There is no father for the child to stay with on weekend, summers, etc… There is no other side of the family full of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives to call on for support and babysitting. What is it really like for choice moms on an average day when it is just them and the baby and no one coming to give them a break? This is what I wanted to know and could not find. I could not find a single video on a day in the life of a single mother by choice. I had to just take a leap of faith and trust that God would enable me to handle it.
Now that I have taken that leap of faith and I am handling it by God’s grace, I decided to create that video. I Vloged a day in the life of a single mother by choice. This post is dedicated to any woman thinking she might want to pursue having a baby on their own who is wondering what it might be like.
When it came time to actually do the video I realized that one day would not really give you a good enough idea of what it is like. So instead of doing an a day in the life of a single mother by choice here is a week in the life of a single mother by choice part one. A full week long is actually a really long video so I broke it into parts.
Enjoy and please let me know if you have any questions in the comments.
