I know we all heard about the crazy Moonlight La La Land Oscar fiasco from last week. By now some of us are probably even sick of hearing about it. Nevertheless, before we put this craziness behind us I want to share three life lessons we can learn from the Moonlight La La Land Oscar fiasco.
1. How to be a gracious loser. We have to give credit to the cast of La La Land who graciously handed over the Oscar to the cast of Moonlight. Take note of the amount of grace that was exhibited by the cast despite their obviously being disappointed that they had not won. Most of us will have an experience like this in life. I actually had one recently. I applied for a promotion at work. Despite several people feeling like I should get it I did not. Obviously I was disappointed. But I still congratulated the person who did get the promotion and wished her well. That’s not always the easiest thing to do however it is important to know how to be the bigger person. You go further and life if you know how to handle disappointment graciously then you will by thrashing others and being a sore loser.
2. Don’t give up hope. Most of us won’t be as lucky as the cast of Moonlight and have our disappointment turned into celebration so quickly. However, this is a great example of why we should not give up hope sometimes when we think we have lost our win is just around the corner.
3. The last and most important lesson that we can learn from the La La Land Moonlight Oscar Fiasco is to trust your instincts and speak up. It’s clear that Warren Beatty thought something was wrong when he looked inside the Oscar envelope. He hesitated a little but he didn’t say anything. When his silence got awkward co-presenter Faye Dunaway move forward with the presentation announcing the wrong winner. If Warren had trusted his gut instinct and simply said something doesn’t seem right here the whole Fiasco likely wouldn’t have happened. Granted there would likely have still been some awkwardness on the stage. However, the right winner of the Oscar would have been called even if after a few moments delay. This would have saved and lots of people embarrassment it would have allowed Moonlight to have a great moment instead of an awkward moment.
4. I know I said only three tips but here is a bonus to the number four. In this great age of social media and smartphones most of us are multitasking at any given moment. We are Facebooking and Tweeting and Snapchatting and Instagramming all the time while we do other tasks such as work. But let us all make a point to not be like the Pricewaterhouse Coopers staff member who was busy tweeting while handing out the wrong envelope thereby causing the Moonlight La La Land Oscar fiasco. Know your limits people we all can’t Tweet and work at the same time. LOL
What other life lesson can we take away from the Moonlight La La Land Oscar fiasco?
