This piece of ceiling dry wall will be my first repair with the
new handyman company. If all goes well it will be on to the
next project 🙂

I’m focused Man! (In my Jay-Z voice.)
If weeks came with themes this week’s theme would be Home. Home is where the heart is, that’s the saying. Home should be a place that adequately represents you, a place where you can feel your best, a place that serves as an emotional and spiritual as well as physical shelter. Home should be a source of Joy.
Well my home is not always a source of Joy for me. My home is a blessing and I do not take it for granted however I’m not entirely happy with it. I purchased my home at age 25. I did not know anything about home ownership or buying a home. I learned as much as I could online and even took a property management class. However nothing can prepare you for doing something as much as doing it. I did not know how to identify certain flaws in the home that the previous owners had dressed up. I did not understand the difference between a neighborhood of renters vs. a neighborhood of owners. I did not know what my taste were in terms of home design and decor. As my dad would have said what I didn’t know could build a whole new world.
Lately I have been thinking more about my home. How it’s organized. The repairs that are needed. The things that I like and don’t like about it. I think this could be the influence or reading my friend Cherise’s Ispaci blog on home organization and design. As a result I have been focused and actually started working on some things. So far I have researched handyman companies and have a repair scheduled, emailed a realtor friend inquiring about what homes like mine are selling for in my neighborhood and called my mortgage company about making a change that could save me some money.
Home repairs and home ownership are still completely overwhelming at times. But I do feel better that I am starting to take control and perhaps even see a way to make continuous improvements to my living situation. This week I am focusing on Home and how I can make it a source of Joy. What are you focused on???

I've been trying to focus on how to make my house more "homey." Even though my current housing situation is less than ideal, most alternatives are not ones I can afford right now, so I decided last week to stay. So now, with 2 of my roommates moving out, I'm trying to figure out how to find more joy in my home. I cleaned and rearranged furniture in my room, and now I can't wait to tackle the kitchen and living room!

This week I am focused on improving people. I am helping an injured child get better and stronger and helping a community of women I interact with get better at their chosen method of expression.

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about! I bought my home as a single girl at 25 and about a year and a half later became a married girl. My house is perfect for a single girl but is way too small for a couple! Not to mention that it is 100 years old and previous owners did not put a lot of effort into their diy fixes. We have found so many issues! Recently part of our plaster ceiling fell onto our dining room table… so that was awesome!

That's something that I had honestly never thought about. My husband is in the AF, so we rent our homes due to the chance of having to move. In a few years we may be able to settle down, so thank you for writing this. I'll make sure I prepare for more than what you see on HGTV lol

It's is hard with a first home. My husband and I made similar mistakes when we first moved and found a home. The entire area quickly dissolved and became renters and the state of the community declined rapidly. Luckily we were able to get out but until we can get a transfer we have to wait in the same area to find our dream home. Don't beat yourself up for your choices! It sounds like you are working on it and it will turn out well!

Arlett,
I think what you are doing in your home to take charge of the situation is great! You've given us some fantastic tips here and several ideas on how to start with a few small things, like minor repairs and inquiring about selling the property to get educated on your home ownership options.
These first steps can help us get focused in the right direction and not feel so overwhelmed with home ownership.
The additional perk is that all these actions are helping you to feel good about your home again – something that is necessary and priceless 🙂 If you ever need help with any ideas when it comes to organization, space planning, or decor please don't hesitate to reach out. Keep going, I'm over here cheering you on!
Your buddy,
Cherise
