The trouble with Vlogs is not knowing what to say. This is why I’ve not done many. Or why I have done only one. I may be able to come up with many words to put on paper but words to fill silence without the feedback of another person do not come so easily. I could never be a radio DJ…all dead air. Since I do not think a Vlog of me staring dumb and speechless into the camera will give you that sense of Joy, I have kept my camera off. Until now…
The other day I came across The Chronicles of Ruthie Hart’s post Accent Vlog. So now I have something to say. Specifically I have many words to say, words that will allow you to hear my accent or lack thereof.
The instructions are to say the words listed below. The thought is that people say these words differently.
Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught, I, Am, Chasing, Joy
[OK, I just added those last four words for my amusement. But I hope you are Chasing Joy with me.]
Also answer some questions that people may answer differently depending on where they live:
• What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
• What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
• What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
• What do you call gym shoes?
• What do you say to address a group of people?
• What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
• What do you call your grandparents?
• What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
• What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
• What is the thing you change the TV channel with?
So checkout my accent Vlog and tell me what you think. Do you hear my Philadelphia accent? Or better yet do your own accent Vlog so I can hear how you talk. This is such a fun idea. I can’t wait to hear your accent.

Once I was at a conference in Vegas and a woman from Ireland interrupted me when I was talking. She said you sound just like them. Umm who would that be Laverne and Shirley. I was not impressed – I am from Milwaukee be the way. Though I didn't grow up here I grew up in western Wisconsin where we know pop is not soda and a drinking fountain is not a bubbler.

I'm from the midwest and I was told we have no accent! 🙂 Although when I was a little kid I kept saying "waRsh" instead of "wash" (don't know where the imaginary R came into play). I still remember in 5th grade in Iowa that all the other kids made fun of me so badly I quickly corrected myself and have been pronouncing "wash" correctly ever since. I think I got that from my Dad actually, he grew up in inner-city and although he is a college professor to this day he doesn't pronounce some words correctly. It's pretty funny 🙂
