Make new friends but keep the old. Some are silver but the other’s gold. If you were ever in the Girl Scouts you probably learned that song about friendship. I definitely agree with the lyrics. Old friends are great but new friends are great too. With old friends you have shared history and a common bond. With new friends you have new shared common interests.
One of the challenging things about adulthood is maintaining positive relationships. Most of us are not meeting new people every few months like when we were in school. Also once you find a career you are content with you are no longer meeting new friends at work either. Most of us by adult hood have developed a circle of friends. However, some friends get married, some friends don’t, some friends have kids, some friends don’t, some friends move to other cities and some friends don’t. We are not always at the same stages in life as our old friends. That’s when making new friends becomes important.
Having fulfilling positive relationships is an important factor for happiness. We all want to have people in our lives to talk to, share experiences with and to make memories with. Sometimes new friends are necessary to make this happen and the Internet can help. Now I am not talking about making new Facebook Friends who you never see or spend any time with. I am talking about making new real life friends who you will see in three dimensions. How can the Internet help with that? MeetUp.com is the answer!
I am at a stage in life where I am single, childless, and into getting healthier, blogging, and building my Chasing Joy Brand. Not all of my friends are at this same stage in life and into the same things. This is where MeetUp comes into play. On the site there are thousands of groups based off of different interests in specific geographical areas. I have joined a few. Yesterday I attended an event after joining the Phillylicious Diva Affairs group. It was a fitness event, the Fabulous Fitness Party, where we danced and worked out to hip hop music. It was kind of like zumba minus the Latin Flare. At the end of the event I chatted with some of the ladies and discovered a few entrepreneurial types who also have events coming up. I had a good time and am looking forward to attending more MeetUps.
Here is a picture of some of us after our workout.
