Four years ago when I started this blog I created a list of new things to do to avoid boredom. Trying new things is one way to have more experiences, meet new people, create memories and take in a little Joy. An idle mind is the Devil’s workshop. So I named my list of activities to try the Devil’s Workshop list.
I had one thing on my list that I had given up on. I actually thought it was no longer a possibility. So what is it? Go to the Oprah show. Back in March of 2010 I wrote, “Go to the Oprah show – I signed up with the Oprah website for the drawings for show tickets. I hope I’m lucky enough to draw tickets before her last show.” Now four years later I am going to the Oprah show. OK, I’m not going to the Oprah Show but I am going to see her. A couple of weeks ago my cousin texted me to let me know Oprah is going on tour and will be in DC for two days this fall. I immediately purchased my tickets. I purchased my tickets before I knew what the tour was about and before I knew who would be coming with me. This was possible as close as I would come to crossing this off of my list so I jumped at the chance.
I have always liked Oprah. I started watching it consistently when I was in college. Not all of her shows were that interesting to me as I was not in her target market (wives and mothers) but I just liked her. I like her personality and her work ethic. I like her openness and her generosity. I admire her accomplishments. My dad often pointed her out as an example of a successful black woman who had a good life that did not depend on her having a traditional role as wife and mother (not that there’s anything wrong with that, being a wife and mother is definitely in my plans)
Now that I am a blogger, I also love how she has branded herself. The fact that I would purchase tickets (that were not cheap) because it was her event while knowing nothing about the event speaks volumes to the power of the Oprah brand. I want to be like that one day. I want people to search for ways to register for Chasing Joy events before they even know the topics because they know and love my brand.
Now that a few weeks have planned I have looked into the event a little more. The tour is called Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend. The tour is going to 8 cities. On Friday Oprah will be presenting. On Saturday members of her crew will be presenting. By her crew I mean people like Iyanla Vanzant, Deepak Chopra, and others.
I am super excited to be going to see Oprah this fall. I am thankful for my cousin who wants to come with me. I am even more thankful for my cousin (owner of Pink Diamond Athletics check her out) for letting me know about the tour.
Do you have a list of interesting things you’d like to try or experience? Have you ever been to see Oprah either during her Oprah show days or at one of her more recent events? Would you ever buy tickets to an event without knowing anything about it just based off of who would be headlining?
